兵庫県西宮市のシンボルのひとつに「桜」がある。夙川(しゅくがわ)沿い4㎞にわたり約1800本の桜が植えられている。1930年代に水路として造設された際に、その川沿いに植えられたのが始まりのようである。
振り返ると樹齢80年を超える桜が存在する。一般的に桜の寿命は、ソメイヨシノで60年位といわれている。そんな中で、当然ながら一部は老木化している。永い年月、風雨にさらされ、虫や鳥などに蝕まれ幹が朽ちている。実際に、毎年見ている限り、その数が目立つ。
Cherry blossoms is one of the symbols of Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. About 1800 cherry trees are planted over 4 km along the Shukugawa River. It seems that it was planted along the river when it was built as a waterway in the 1930s.
Looking back, there are cherry trees over 80 years old. Generally, the life of cherry trees is said to be about 60 years in SomeiYoshino cherry tree. Under such circumstances, some are aged. It has been exposed to the weather for a long time, and tree trunk has been decayed by insects and birds. In fact, the number stands out every year.
行政としては、桜は市のシンボルなので、かなり前から老木の治療や再生に力を入れている。その成果が見えてきている。朽ちた幹から新しい枝をつけ花を咲かせている。復活の枝々に咲く花に新しい息吹を感じる。
As a government, cherry blossoms are a symbol of the city, so they have been focusing on treating and regenerating old trees for quite some time. The results are beginning to appear. A new branch is attached to the rotten trunk to make it bloom. I feel a new breath in the cherry blossoms that bloom on the resurrected branches.
